Siauliai Public Municipal Library was found in 1977. It consists of 5 departments and 9 branch libraries which are in different places of the city. Citizens make 171.000 visits a year. They can use a collection of 284,000 holdings, data bases, reading rooms, the Library subscribes to 100 titles of periodical publications. The personnel include 150 employees.
The Library has tried to combine tradition and modernism recently. Nurturance of reading, organization of culture events and purposeful free time is the traditional part of the Library. Providing the information service, establishment of new technologies, accession to the Internet databases has become more and more important. Computers are implemented, modern special reading-rooms are opened, new services are provided to the readers, electronic documents are replenished, databases are prescribed, e-mail catalogue is created in the Library. These processes are organized due to the realization of projects and programs, searching for extra finances from support funds. Support has been received from: Open Lithuania Fund, Open Society Institute in Hungary, Japanese Government Library Support Fund, Baltic-American Partnership Program, European Commission Delegation in Lithuania, The Ministry of Culture, association Langas i Ateiti, Šiauliai city Municipality and other sponsors. Thanks to the projects the Internet and Foreign Languages reading-rooms, Childrens information development center, computerized Toy Library were set up. Public Internet centers were established in Lieporiai and Rėkyva branch libraries. The Library participates in Lithuanian Integral Library Information System Program and is inscribed in the Library modernization program. In 2003 94 events and 246 exhibitions were organized which were visited by 5.000 citizens. The most important events: Library for Community (National Library Week), discussion Šiauliai at the Highway of European Union: Pros and Cons, Dainai Pedestrian Avenue, children collective festival Hello, Summer, the conference City Boys, local ethnographer, pharmaceutical chemist of merit Vanda Kavaliauskienė anniversary exhibition, young local ethnographers from Mileikis school work exhibition, the opening of young tourist center ethnographers exhibition One Day, the presentation of the volume one publication Zanavykų šnektos žodynas by Šiauliai University Department of Lithuanian Language, summer film days in the Toy Library, Lieporiai writer meeting, etc.
